Amy Cannestra’s work is an exploration of coping; coping with expectation, trauma, life, and death. Sculptures, drawings, performance, and multimedia installations come to life through the vocabulary formulated by the baggage that attaches to objects, body, and identity. Aware or unaware of how we cope changes the relationship individuals have with the stories and symbolism created. Though Cannestra’s work has a tendency to be somber, dark, and occasionally off putting, there is always a sense of hope, life, and survival.
With a BFA in communication design from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (2006) and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2015) Cannestra has taught art & design, attended residencies, and exhibited internationally. She performed at the 2016 Transart Triennial in Germany, installed a multi-media sculpture in the 2017 Biennial in Rio de Janeiro, and was one of four artists to represent Grenada, West Indies in the 2019 Venice Biennial. Cannestra is currently living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, working as a Marketing Manager at Novus Home Mortgage and is always looking for ways to help the Milwaukee art scene grow.
Alongside a thriving studio practice, Cannestra is one third of SPOOKY BOOBS, a trio of artists that use art, language, and design to visualize the trivialization of women’s experiences.
