Since 2022, Penn has focused her studio practice on the large, totemic wall pieces called the Phantom series. They reflect a nuanced and elegant dialogue between gravity and instability. Each work is composed with materials chosen for its malleability as well as its capacity to activate light. Shapes, gestures, and marks hover between veils of silkscreen mesh to function as dreamlike semaphores. Their scale and verticality allude to the commemorative stone stelae found in antiquity, evoking an oblique, imposing figural presence.
