William Kentridge’s bronze sculpture Open (2018) uses abstract forms as a way to question accepted and existing bodies of knowledge. As one of the most stirring and incisive artists of his time, Kentridge connects his meditations on art and world history—from the early Soviet era to the legacy and ancient narratives of Africa and elsewhere—to his own vocabulary of artistic forms. Open represents one hopeful - if slightly hollow - figure in the face of the persistent social and political corruption that he critiques.
