While Miga’s overall body of work encompasses multiple media, his experimental approaches to photography—including abstract treatments and alternative photographic techniques—reflect a broader contemporary interest in pushing instant film beyond conventional representation into material and process-driven realms. His abstract Polaroid works emerge from interventions in the medium itself, exploring how chemical and physical actions (such as applying pressure, heat, or other treatments to the emulsion) can yield unpredictable and painterly effects, dissolving the boundary between photography and mark-making. This approach aligns with a wider field of experimental instant photography in which artists manipulatePolaroid and other instant film to create visual surfaces where chance and technique converge. Michael Miga (b. 1977, Oakland, CA) is an American artist whose diverse practice spans photography, encaustic, etching, and watercolor. Miga holds an MFA in Studio Art from Pratt Institute and has exhibited work at Denise Bibro Gallery, NYC, Janet Kurnatowski, NYC, Gallery Boreas, Brooklyn, NY, Usable Space in Milwaukee
