Influenced by the Abstract Expressionist Ceramic movement, Milwaukee-based multi-media artist Tony Macias’s electric-kiln low-fired works draw inspiration from Mexican and Native American art traditions as well as Korean and Japanese vessel forms. Working with primal materials—clay, water, and fire—he fashions large, circular wall pieces with irregular edges in warm natural colors, often resembling cross-sections of geological strata or the remains of unearthed fossils. Finished works honor the ritual of the process: rolling, paddling, and lifting from fire is part of “an ongoing dialogue between earth, fire, air, and sky,” says the artist. Terra Firma will be on view through June 14.
