Years ago, Sean Abrahams reached out to me unexpectedly, asking if I would take a look at his work. At the time, I was overwhelmed with other commitments, so I suggested we meet on a specific date and that he bring a selection of pieces with him. I neglected to put the appointment on my calendar, so when he arrived carrying a portfolio, I was completely caught off guard.
Expecting something familiar or easily recognizable, I instead found myself staring into a stack of unframed ink-on-paper drawings unlike anything I had encountered before. Each sheet unfolded into an impossibly dense world of obsessive detail, strange logic, and singular imagination. My initial surprise quickly gave way to fascination. The work resisted easy categorization, revealing itself slowly through intricate compositions that seemed to emerge from a deeply personal visual language.
That chance encounter has stayed with me ever since. Abrahams' drawings are a reminder that some of the most compelling artists are found not through established networks or institutional pipelines, but through unexpected conversations, accidental meetings, and the willingness to remain open to discovery. His work embodies the spirit of this exhibition: an exploration of alternative routes—both for making art and for finding the people who make it. Sometimes the most meaningful discoveries happen off the beaten path, where curiosity, coincidence, and genuine connection can lead to extraordinary encounters.
